When does a new day start, with the day or the night?

Most of us would say the day. It is a new day when the sun rises. This is the way of the world but not the way of God. Look at what it says about the very first day God created in Genesis 1.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day.

Genesis 1:1-5

In God’s order of time, a day starts with the night, not the day. In His paradigm, we move from darkness to light not from light to darkness. The way of the world is young to old, strong to weak, alive to dead. But with God’s way we live from darkness to light, weakness to strength, hopelessness to hope, tears to joy and ultimately from death to eternal life.

The night is also a time of sleep, a time from rest. So, each day begins from a place of rest, not ends with rest. We live the opposite way around to the world.

For His anger is but for a moment,
His favor is for life;
Weeping may endure for a night,
But joy comes in the morning.

Psalm 30:5 (NKJV)

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light…

Ephesians 5:8 (NKJV)

But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvellous light.

1 Peter 2:9 (NKJV)

Put it into practice

Change your mindset about your life. Start to live from darkness to light, from weakness to strength, from problems to solutions. Begin each day knowing that the day has started with a time of rest.
